Presbytery Sunday

The session clerk, Alex Lorimer, welcomed Rev. Lawson Brown to this special service, at which the pulpit of every church in the Presbytery is occupied by a visiting minister. Though now retired, he was latterly minister of St. Leonards Church, St. Andrews. The congregation learnt that this was his first visit to Dairsie Church. He brought greetings from the Presbytery, and then spoke of on the meaning of Lent. After the service, he had the opportunity to speak with members of the congregation, when tea/coffee was served in the church hall.

Coffee Morning

It was announced at the church service that the popular coffee mornings are to be resumed for the summer season. The first one will take place on Thursday from 10 am and then on the second Thursday of each month.

Hall AGM

It is hoped that local folk will give their support to the committee by attending the annual general meeting, which will take place on Thursday at 8 pm.

Silent Auction

This is only about three weeks away, with the date fixed for Friday, March 26. Mrs. Janet Strickland would be pleased to hear of any item to be offered for the sale, good condition, small in value, or large, all are welcome. Some very tempting items have already been gifted by local businesses and by media personalities. Please phone Janet if you have items you think may be suitable.

Correction

The silent auction is to take place in the Memorial Hall, Dairsie, on Saturday, March 27 at 7 pm., not on the Friday, as reported last week. There have been a number of questions as to how such an auction works. So, here goes. Everyone at the sale is given a number. Each item offered for sale is accompanied by a piece of paper. Offers for the item are written down on the paper, together with the bidder's personal number. At a given time, all bidding ceases, and the highest offer on each item win. The word is - keep offering items for the sale - the more the merrier!

Silent Auction

A silent auction is being held in Dairsie village hall next Saturday (March 27) to raise money for Dairsie Parish Church funds.

The auction will feature a number of items donated by local businesses, as well as some items from celebrities and politicians, including a signed book from Gavin Hastings, House of Commons whisky and a silk tie worn by Mike Baldwin in Coronation Street.

Other items include photographs signed by the cast of The Bill, River City and Casualty.

Organiser Jan Strickland, said; "It should be a real good event. The last auction raised over £1700 and we're hoping to break the £2000 mark this time. We are very grateful to everyone who has made a contribution."

The auction begins at 7 pm and the entry price is £2 and includes cheese and wine.

Moderator visits

The congregation of Dairsie Parish Church were pleased to welcome to the morning service the Moderator of St Andrews Presbytery, Rev. Iain Paton, minister of the linked churches of Elie, Kilconquhar and Colinsburgh. During his year of office, he is required to fulfil five visits to churches other than his own ministry, and he came bringing goodwill and blessings to all from the presbytery. He was minister of St. Andrews Church, Jerusalem, for a time, and as a remembrance of his visit to Dairsie, he brought from there the gift of a fine olive wood carving of praying hands. Mr. Colin Campbell-Brown thanked him warmly on behalf of the congregation, and conveyed the best wishes of all to the moderator and his wife, who accompanied him, and who was pleased to enjoy a short period of fellowship over refreshments in the church hall after the service.

Baptism

There was a much enlarged congregation at the same service, as the minister, Rev. Alex Strickland, in addition to welcoming the moderator, had the happy duty of conducting a baptism. Guy and Elizabeth Logan brought their first-born, Andrew Thomas to be baptised. They live at Tarvit Home Farm, but came to Dairsie Church, as the Logan family have a long connection with the village. Great-grandfather to the new arrival was the late James Logan, who farmed at Dairsie Mains.

Church Guild

Sqdn. Ldr. McCord gave a most interesting talk on the work of RAF Leuchars at the recent meeting. It must be kept at quick reactive alert at all times. Two active Tornado squadrons are maintained there, together with one training squadron. This takes a personnel of 2000 RAF and around 200 civilians, including engineers, catering, administration and so on. Attempts are made to keep noise nuisance to a minimum, but fulfilling their role to 'Attack and Protect' must take priority. A donation was made to the RAF charity fund and Barbara Fargie expressed thanks and appreciation of the service. A short business meeting followed the refreshments.
