September 23rd was the last meeting of the Community Council before the new Community Council takes over in October. Thanks were given to Retiring Chairman Andrew Stevenson for the hard work and sound advice he had brought to the committee over the last few years. Gareth Jones is also retiring after a busy three year stint. The rest of the committee were thanked, and as the number of nominations did not exceed the eight places available, there will be no election. The six who were correctly nominated were Norma Davies, John Swinley, Jill Edwards, George Becher, David May and Liz Woodcock. The new committee has the power to co-opt another two members to make up the full compliment of eight.
Please note - The statutory inaugural meeting of the new Community Council will take place on Tuesday 26th October at 7pm in the Memorial Hall to appoint the office bearers, and not on Thursday 14th October as originally advertised.
A further meeting with the Presbyterial Consultative Committee was held on 23rd September to discuss the way forward for Dairsie Parish Church when the minister retires in the spring 2005. The church members were well represented, and there were many questions and concerns frankly expressed. Eventually, it was agreed that the committee would carry forward further enquiries on behalf of the members, and return with their findings at a later date.
After an enjoyable summer of outdoor bowls at Kemback, the Wednesday afternoon club has resumed it's meetings indoors at Dairsie Memorial Hall with activities such as carpet bowls, dominoes, etc. New members should just pop along to the hall, where a friendly welcome awaits you.
This Sunday 10th October will be the Harvest Thanksgiving service in Dairsie Church, and gifts of produce etc. can be handed in to the church hall on Saturday morning from 10.30am. After the service, all donated produce will be sold, together with the gifts donated to the school at their harvest service held on the Friday. The proceeds from the sale will go to Christian Aid for Sudan to help the suffering people there. So, the church is appealing to any local folk, not just churchgoers, to give your support to this worthwhile cause by coming along to the hall at around 11am to make some purchases.
The recent Quiz Night held in the Memorial Hall was voted a success and a great night out as usual. There were 12 tables of eager competitors, sharpening their brains, whilst enjoying the fun, and the evening raised £450 towards hall funds. The winning team was Tayviallach Golfing Society, followed closely by runners-up 2+1, and third were the Aliens and Also-rans. Where do they dream up the names?
The service was led by the minister, the Rev. Alex. Strickland and he spoke of our good fortune, as, though the quality of our harvests may vary with each season, we do not suffer from drought, floods or civil war, leaving us with nothing, as shown so sadly on our televisions almost every day. He thanked all who had given, including the children of the Sunday School, who presented their harvest gifts during the service, and together with the other gifts from church members and the Primary School, they were all offered for sale in the hall after the service. The sum of £196 was raised, which is to go to Christian Aid, and earmarked to help the suffering peoples of Sudan.
After the devotions giving thanks for the harvest, the President introduced the speaker, Mrs. Hazel Mulligan, an Occupational Therapist. Their work, she explained, is with people with physical or psychiatric disorders or disability, with the aim of helping the patients to their optimum ability. They are helped in several ways, such as in activities to help with daily living, such as dressing themselves, making meals and so on, including advice on aids available to facilitate these actions. Household management, developing hobbies, joining social groups and much more is all involved in the service they offer, and members saw some of the aids used. In the vote of thanks, it was acknowledged how vital this service is to so many.
A reminder that there will be no service in Dairsie Church on the last Sunday of the month. Instead, the linked churches of Dairsie, Kemback, and Strathkiness will unite in worship in Kemback Church at 11am.
