Flower Festival

"Music in May" was the theme of the Flower Festival held in Dairsie Church over the weekend, and what a delightful show it proved to be. The hours spent planning, thinking up creative ways of presenting the theme, and then, in some cases, days building the stands and finally arranging the flowers, were hours well-spent. Each exhibit had so much to discover; the colours; the arrangements; and the artefacts chosen with such care; resulted in very many heartfelt compliments. There was tea and biscuits to follow, and a sales table, and all who gave in any way are thanked, but special thanks must go to the floral artists. They were members of Dairsie Church, some ladies from Cults and Ceres returning help given at their show, and in particular, the ladies of the Floral Art class at the Forgan Arts Centre, who were happy to use their new skills with the support of their tutor, Peggy Reid, who also created a display herself.

A Walk in Kemback

The Cupar Area of the Consultative Group of Churches is organising a walk this Sunday.5th. June. It is a chance to meet up with members from the other churches, and is promised to be not too challenging. If interested, meet at Kemback Church car park at 2.15pm. Tea will be served in Dairsie Church Hall from 3pm.

Dairsie School

Five or six children of different age groups have formed a Mini-board, which represents the pupils. This has been going for some time, and they met today (Tuesday) to finalise the arrangements for a School Fete, to be held on Friday, 10th June from 4 to about 6pm. Now the children would like the support of local folk, to come along to their event; to buy the plants the Gardening Club have raised; there will be the usual sales, for which items will be most welcome; and for the children, games are planned, which should be fun for all to watch.

The Rev. Sheila Blount

At a Presbytery Service in Dairsie Parish Church on Thursday, 2nd June, the parishes of Dairsie and Cupar were formally 'linked', and the Rev. Sheila Blount, presently Minister of Cupar St. John's, was introduced as the Minister of Dairsie in this newly linked charge. The Moderator of the Presbytery of St. Andrews, the Rev. Colin Dempster, led the worship, welcoming a large congregation of members of Presbytery, elders and members from both churches, and friends. The Bible readings were given by Mr. Alex. Lorimer, Session Clerk, Dairsie; the 'Narrative' by the Presbytery Clerk; and the 'Act of Linking' by the Moderator. Thereafter the Rev. Sheila Blount, having taken the appropriate vows, was introduced as the Minister of the Linked Charge. After the service, tea and some splendid home baking from the linked charges was served, giving those present an opportunity to welcome the Minister informally.

The Safari Supper is to be on Saturday, 18th June, meeting at Dairsie Church Hall at 6.30pm. There will be a welcoming drink, all will be given their planned venues for each of the three courses, then the evening ends with a return to the hall for coffee/tea. Tickets are only £10, obtainable from Carol Owen.

Communion Service

On Sunday, 5th June, the Communion Service was conducted by the Rev. Sheila Blount, her first service after her appointment to the new linkage. Service as usual at 9.30 next week, but the following Sunday, 19th June, there will be no service in Dairsie. Instead, a joint service will be held in Cupar St. John's at 11am to mark the linkage.

Fife Local Plan

On Wednesday, 15th June, David May and Blair Littlejohn were invited to attend the Tayport Local Plan Action Group meeting and to join in the discussion about opposition to the Fife Council Local Plan. The views of Dairsie residents who attended the recent meeting in the Memorial Hall were briefly reported on, as were those of Springfield and Newburgh through their representatives. Unfortunately the Guardbridge Representative was unable to attend.

As expected, opposition to the proposed unnecessary large increase to the housing stock, coupled with a corresponding increase to the population in N.E.Fife, was the main topic of discussion, coupled with the way communities could register their displeasure at these Fife Council proposals.

Several high profile events are being considered to show our displeasure, and further meetings will be arranged. Anyone who would like further information about this meeting and the future proposals, or who would like to help, please contact either David or Blair.

School News

The children of Dairsie Primary School have been very busy of late, and have sent in the details.

  • Football Festival. A team of nine pupils took part in the Festival held at Bell Baxter High School recently. This annual event is organised by The Scottish Football Association, and involves a number of primary schools in Fife. Dairsie team chose to play as A.C.Milan, and although maybe not as successful, they all thoroughly enjoyed the day.
  • Book Fair. This was held in the school recently, and due to the generosity of parents, the school has been able to purchase over £100 worth of books. During the Fair, a competition was held to design a poster. The winners were Robert Innes, Camassia Bruce, Orla White and Georgina Rolfe, and their designs will go forward to a National competition.
  • Football. A team of pupils from the after school football club played a team from Balmullo Primary School in a friendly match on Wednesday, 8th June at Balmullo. Both teams played very well, and they were supported by a lot of parents and family. Dairsie eventually won the match 5-0. Gata Football Competition. Dairsie football team played in the final of the Primary Schools tournament on Saturday 11th June at Balmullo Gala. They were beaten in the final, but played magnificently. Dairsie pupils also took place in the hill race during the Gala, and completed the race in style.
  • Summer Fete. The annual Summer Fete was held at the school on Friday 10th June. There were various stalls, including cake and candy and tombola. Once again, Mrs. Law and Mrs. Mason had plants for sale which were grown by the after school Garden Club. Through the fantastic effort of all involved, and the support of parents, friends and family, over £550 was raised. This will go towards the cost of outings and to resources for the school. The pupils and staff would like to thank everybody for their help and support at this event.
  • BBQ and Sports Afternoon. Wet weather kept the barbeque indoors on Monday 13th June. However, over a 100 pupils, parents and friends were treated to a delicious BBQ prepared by the school cook and Fife School Catering Service. Afterwards the majority of parents and friends stayed on to watch the potted sports which were held in the school hall. The distance races will be held later in the week in the park.
  • School Trip. To round off a very busy term, the staff and pupils will be going to Sensation in Dundee for the summer outing. This very popular Science venue should be great fun for all, and is to be followed by lunch at Camperdown Park - weather permitting!
  • Assembly. The end of term assembly will be held in the school on Thursday 30th June. This will be led by the pupils and attended by Sheila Blount, Minister of St. John's, Cupar linked with Dairsie. The staff and pupils extend an invitation to parents, friends and members of the community to attend if they so wish.
