Guild Dedication

The minister, the Rev. Sheila Blount, led the Service of Dedication of Dairsie Church Guild at the morning service on Sunday, 2nd October. The Guild theme" Dare to care with commitment" was central to the worship, and as is the custom, the members took an active part throughout. Members welcomed the congregation warmly as they arrived: others took the offering: the lessons were read by Avril Paul and Kathleen Innes Smith: the prayer of response was given by Willa Ferguson and members of the Guild stood to make the prayer of dedication.

Sunday 9th October is the harvest thanksgiving service, at which, in addition to the harvest gifts, donations for Christian Aid will be welcomed.

Quiz Night

Eleven teams entered this year, and after Blair Littlejohn setting the questions for several years, two ladies, Carol Owen and Morag Jones, got together to tackle compiling them this time. The categories of questions proved to be different, (the feminine touch?), but greatly enjoyed. For the first time a team of ladies "2+2 Company" were the winners (the feminine touch again?) There were tasty refreshments in the interval, and all voted it, as always, a very successful evening.

SWRI

Anne Hoggan was the speaker/demonstrator at the October meeting of Dairsie 'Rural'. Her subject was 'Quilting', and members learnt that after 12 years of various crafts, Anne was introduced to quilting and was hooked. About 3 years ago, she founded Cupar Quilters, which has a keen following, and also takes classes. The work she brought to show was greatly admired, and amid cries of 'but I couldn't do that,' members were encouraged to make a Xmas coaster, and really enjoyed the challenge.

Winners of the competitions were:

  • Flower of the month - 1st Mary Booth: 2nd - Anne Brown.
  • Premature babies' hat (knitted) - 1st - Mary Booth: 2nd - Janette Armes.
  • A collection for Alzheimer's was taken.

    Family Harvest Worship

The church was well filled at the harvest thanksgiving service in Dairsie Parish Church on Sunday morning. It was beautifully decorated with flowers, fruit and vegetables, gifted jointly by members of the church and by the school, whose harvest service was held there on Thursday. The flowers were to be distributed to local folk, the elderly and others in the community, whilst the fruit and vegetables were sold after the service, with the remainder going to "Women's Aid".

The Rev. Sheila Blount led the worship, on the theme "For the fruits of all creation, thanks be to God". Carol Owen read the lesson, and three young folk from St. John's, members of their "Sunday Alternative" (at one time the bible class) spoke movingly on the theme "Go Green", raising the many things we must do to help the planet - little things in themselves such as turning off lights, but by which the cumulative effect will go some way to save our threatened planet.

There was a special collection for Christian Aid, to which was added the money raised by the sale of produce, and it is to be earmarked for the people of Bangladesh, whose need is so great at this time.

    Community Council
  • Proposed Pedestrian Crossing - Good news at last! A pedestrian crossing for Dairsie is included in the 2005/2006 Works Programme as a Category 2 scheme. It is hoped that a funding package can be sourced and that subject to various legislative processes it may be possible to construct this scheme during the current financial year. The proposed crossing would be a PUFFIN light controlled crossing and it has been recommended by Fife Council that the only suitable site is between the 2 entrances of the garage to keep close to the natural pedestrian desire line and avoiding a number of practical problems eg vehicle access, bus stops. The Draft Plan will be available for inspection in the Community Council folder in the shop.
  • 20 mph zones - Fife Council is planning to impose the mandatory 20 mph and road engineering works in Osnaburgh Court and state they will be informing residents shortly and also state that the Police will only support a 20mph zone if it is mandatory. The Community Council feels that the East Area Transportation Dept in Cupar is ignoring the wishes of the residents and that a speed survey has never taken place in Osnaburgh Court. Dr Mclellan, Head of Fife Council Transportation in Glenrothes is being contacted.
  • Special Public Meeting - Residents are invited to a Special Public Meeting hosted by the Community Council in Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 3rd November after the school holidays. The results of the questionnaire will be available and everyone will be able to have their say.
  • Archery Success

David Cowieson has returned from the recent World Disabled Archery Championship He achieved a season's best in the individual competition, and the Great Britain team of which he was a member, returned proudly having won the silver medal in the overall team competition, being only beaten into second place by Korea. Warmest congratulations go to all the competitors.

    Church Guild

The Guild resumes on Monday 24th October at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Mr Bill Dorward from Crail who will be speaking about the "Islands around Fife". As usual, all, both male and female, are welcome to Guild meetings.

    Memorial Hall

At the last Quiz Night it was announced that the roof above the main door of the Memorial Hall would be repaired and re-tiled in November at a cost of about £7,500. Whilst announcing this improvement, acknowledgement was made of the support given by many, many villagers at the various functions held throughout the years. This, along with monies generated from private functions, had enabled the Committee to accumulate £5,000 which would be used along with a contribution of £2,500 generously made by Fife Council to complete the work. On completion the Hall will once again be watertight and will help to improve the look of the entrance to the village.

If you would like to assist in the maintenance and upkeep of Hall please buy your 200 Club ticket for next year from any committee member. It's only a fiver.
