Church Guild

At the February meeting members were entertained by the children of P1-4 from Dairsie School. The performances were just great. The poems were spoken out clearly; the Millenium dance was a foot-tapping joy to watch; and the finale, Spring Chicken, an action song, let their fun and exuberance shine through - the attempts by the ladies in the repeat performance were cheerily but perhaps not so skilfully performed! Refreshments and chatter with the children followed, before their return to school with many warm thanks from the members. A short business meeting followed, during which the President spoke of the sadness at the death of Mrs Jean Manzie, who had served faithfully for 45 years. Members also learnt of the death of Mrs Betty Drummond, at one time a resident of the village, and well known to many.

Road Lining

After the tragedies of accidents over the past few years at Dairsie roundabout, it is hoped that the new markings will be obeyed by all drivers and make for greater safety at the junction.

200 Club

Winners of the February draw of the Dairsie War Memorial Hall 200 Club were: L. Fraser - £20; R. Murray - £10; B. Sinclair - £5.

Coffee Morning

Dairsie SWRI held their annual fundraising coffee morning in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, 25th February. Members had worked very hard to produce a great deal of home baking, and to fill the other stalls. The purpose was to raise funds to be shared between the local branch of the Royal National Institute for the Blind and the senior citizens annual treat. It was very disappointing therefore that the event was so poorly supported, with mainly the regulars who so faithfully attend the functions coming along once more. The good news is that despite the disappointment, those who came must have dug deep, as the amazing sum of £270 was raised for these two charities, and the ladies of the "Rural" express their deepest thanks for such heart-warming support.

Pedestrian Crossing

The Community Council has been informed by Fife Council Transportation Department that work on the long awaited Pedestrian Crossing is to commence in early May. It will be situated between the two garage entrances as this is perceived as the "pedestrian desire line". To disturb residents as little as possible, the audible tone will be set to the lowest volume possible, and will only be on between 8am and 6pm. The garage entrances will have "Keep Clear" road markings. Owing to the zig zag lines, three parking spaces will be lost, so that though it will still be possible to park outside the shop, there will be the three lost spaces to the east past that point. However, the "No Parking" zone should make it easier for vehicles exiting the garage.

Residents can look forward to being able to cross the road safely, and another bonus is that the school will be able to use the park for sports and any events, as an approved crossing has been required to permit the children to cross the road.

Church Guild

Members welcomed Major Mary Pickstone to the March meeting, who is now retired from the Salvation Army. After 40 years of dedicated service which took her to serve abroad, including to Kenya and Singapore, as well as in Britain, her final posting before retirement was to Forfar.

However, her slide show was about the charity" Feed the Minds." This was founded in 1958, and offers help to the people of many countries, with their main focus on bringing literacy to them. So their main need is for recent text books and Christian reading books, and also related items such as office supplies including computers, and any other items requested. The projects are led by their own people - no sending workers out from this country, which makes the charity much more cost effective, with only 12 staff required to administer it. The slides showed some of the people who were helped, and the ways in which education can give them the opportunity for employment, and help them to build up existing businesses.

There was a sales table of items made by the speaker and her assistant, Miss Casebow. Both were thanked by Avril Paul, and then members took the opportunity to purchase from the stall, before the refreshments were served.

Death of Robert Sneddon

"Bobby" died peacefully in the Adamson Hospital on Tuesday, 14th March, after a long illness. The funeral service was in Dairsie Parish Church on Tuesday, 21st March, and our sympathies are with his wife Maria, daughter Caroline, and other relations and friends.

20 mph Zone

It is hoped that motorists will observe the flashing lights as they approach the village at speed from the west - the 20mph to protect the schoolchildren is now in operation.
