Mrs. Janet Stalker died in Ninewells Hospital on 29th November after an illness, and the funeral, conducted by the Rev. Gareth Davies, took place in Dairsie Parish Church on November 5th. For many years, Mrs Stalker (nee Nicol) lived in the village, until she moved to Northeden House in Cupar. She was closely related to the Nicol family, who, at that time, ran the garage and the village shop. Thoughts are with her daughter, Jennifer and the family, at this sad time.

Remembrance Sunday

There is to be a short service of remembrance on Sunday afternoon at Dairsie War Memorial Hall at 2pm. Organised by Dairsie SWRI, this service is non-denominational and open to all, and includes the hanging of a wreath on the plaque on the outer wall. Lest we forget.

Nature gone mad!

A walk through the Dairsie Pitcairn Park on a cool but sunny morning, and lo and behold, the grass was scattered with the smiling faces of daisies and dandelions!

If you would like to join, there are still a few tickets at £5 for 12 monthly draws - please contact Carol Owen.

Remembrance Sunday

The 11th day of the 11th month and the service was remembered of so many armed forces and civilians in the First World War, and the wars and conflict which have followed since. There are so many memories of those who lost their lives or were wounded, physically or mentally; of the families and friends who also suffer; and prayers that mankind will learn to settle their differences by diplomacy, not war. Dairsie held a remembrance service in the church in the morning taken by the Rev. Gareth Davies, and then in the afternoon, there was a short service in the Memorial Hall led by Norma Davis and Willa Ferguson, who stood in at very short notice due to the unavoidable absence of the arranged leader.

Helen Wallace

The funeral service for Helen Wallace, who died on Sunday 4th November in the Adamson Hospital, Cupar after a long illness bravely borne, was held in Dairsie Parish Church, and the congregation heard of her loving care for foster children over many years. Thoughts are with her husband, and the family and many friends in this time of sadness.

SWRI

The Annual General Meeting of the Dairsie branch was held on the 2nd of November 2007. Members of New Gilston and Woodside "Rural" were welcomed - they were to be tellers of the votes for the committee for the coming year and also were to present the entertainment. The usual business was dealt with and approved. The voting for the committee took place, and votes counted. The new committee was elected - Mary Booth is the new President and other office bearers will be appointed by the committee. Retiring President, Janette Armes, and all past committee were thanked for their services. The visitors were thanked for their services as tellers and then they presented first a challenging Quiz - causing a few rueful groans! Poems and a song completed the entertainment - appreciative thanks were given and then all enjoyed the refreshments.

Competition winners were: The Rosebowl for most points gained in the year - Willa Ferguson, 2nd - Marion Smith; Flower of the month 1st - Willa Ferguson, 2nd - Doris Eccles.

Poppy Collection

The convener of the door-to-door collection in Dairsie and district thanks all collectors and all who gave so generously - £374.54 was given, a welcome increase on last year.

Winter Warmer

A busy time for the hall committee to organise the Winter Warmer with super soup, all made and donated by six members of the committee. Such a choice with second helpings snapped up readily by the enthusiastic diners. Tea/coffee and biscuits followed, with lively chatter all around. Tickets for the many raffle prizes were quickly sold, as they were for the Christmas hamper, and the home baking stall was kept busy too. The chair of the hall committee, Carol Owen, thanked warmly all who helped, all who gave items for the raffles and stall, and all who came to give their support. More folk were there this year, with a number of first-timers who were especially welcomed. Money raised goes to the maintenance of the hall, and this year the amount raised was £297 for the event and the sales of tickets for the hamper raised £56. It was won by a delighted Sheena Christie from Cupar, a regular supporter of events in Dairsie. Appreciative thanks are due to the volunteers on the hall committee who give up their time to arrange events and work behind the scenes to keep our hall running.

Guild Dedication

Members of Dairsie Church Guild were on duty at the service in the Parish Church, when the Rev. Gareth Davies gave the sermon, and rededicated the Guild. Virtually all other duties were led by the ladies of the Guild. Some members welcomed worshippers on entering - others read the lessons and prayers or took the collection. The President, Willa Ferguson, told the history of the Guild from its beginning 100 years ago, and appropriately, the Guild Centenary Hymn was sung, with its theme of Worship, Fellowship and Service. Refreshments with homemade biscuits were served in the hall after the service.

Members should all have received their tickets for 2008 from their usual suppliers. If not, ask them or phone Carol Owen, who still has tickets available for new members - £5 for one year of one draw each month.

Guild Week

After the rededication of the Church Guild on Sunday, members met in the hall on Monday, and readings and prayers were of thinking of all others of any race, colour or creed. The speaker was Mrs Duggan, Library Supervisor at Cupar Library. Our libraries used to be just a book lending service, but the service they offer now just grows and grows! Mrs. Duggan spoke of fostering interest in all forms of reading and for all ages. The intense hush of the past is gone, and almost from birth, infants, toddlers, school age and beyond are encouraged to go along to hear stories, and choose books to take home. Then there are computers, with tuition for the terrified of this complex, intimidating machine. Family histories can be researched, with census records, parish registers and maps to help in the search. There is an adult reading group once a month on Tuesday evenings at which a book is chosen, read at home and discussed. Not forgotten are the blind or partially sighted for whom there are audio books - CD's and cassettes to listen to at home, with a home delivery service for those unable to go to the library, and of course, the library vans, bringing literature to our homes. Mrs. Duggan was warmly thanked and business and refreshments followed.

Holy Communion

Members are reminded that Holy Communion will be celebrated in Dairsie Parish Church this Sunday, 2nd December at 9.45am.
