The Fife Herald has kindly given the Dairsie web site permission to copy the Dairsie News that is printed in the Fife Herald every week.

The school holiday and it seems to have been either very hot and sunny, with garden hoses out, or it is very close, with the haar overwhelming the village, but at least it is not as bad as the Beijing smog! Happily, it has not deterred the children from playing out of doors, and family groups enjoying walks and outings, making the most of their holiday time together. Some warm and gentle summer days would be good though!
At the service in Dairsie Parish Church on Sunday 3rd August there were many young families to share in the Sacrament of Baptism of the infant daughter of Sarah (nee Taylor) and Michael McDonald. Their infant daughter was baptised Ciara Anne by the minister, the Rev. Andrew Stevenson, and then the proud parents walked down the church to introduce her to the congregation. Their first child, William, aged three, was also baptised in Dairsie. Sarah was brought up in the village, but now lives in Surbiton, Surrey. Her parents, Bill and Margaret Taylor, later moved to Balmullo, but they continue to worship in Dairsie Church. The minister’s theme was Joy, and it was indeed a joyous occasion.
The facilities in the church hall are being upgraded at present with the access made easier and a toilet converted for the disabled. As a result, there is dust and chaos there at present, but it is hoped that the work will not be too long in completion, and then the final phase of redecoration can begin.
The Rev. Alex Strickland and the Rev. Andrew Stevenson led the worship at the funeral service for May Hunter which was held in Dairsie Parish Church on Friday, 8th August. She and her husband, Robert, who was the church organist for many years, made their home in Pitscottie, and were a devoted couple who came together through their love of music. May was an accomplished singer, so music was at the heart of their marriage of 53 happy years. May loved her garden and her home in the beautiful surrounding countryside. Together, they took golfing holidays, often in the Moray area. She gave him her help and support always and was a generous, friendly, positive person. May was able to stay in her own home until, only for a short time before her death, she was admitted to a hospice where she died peacefully at the great age of 90. Prayers are with her family members and all who knew her.
Your correspondent is pleased to be asked by Johanne Evans, to convey the warm and appreciative thanks of all the staff at the Post Office, to the people of Dairsie and district, for their active support throughout the uncertain and very anxious time suffered recently, with Post Offices under threat of closure. She said that it is a great sadness that the service is being reduced so much and her thoughts are with those who have suffered. However, Dairsie folk are delighted and relieved that we still have our post office and express thanks to them for their valued service.
The schools reopen on Tuesday. The weather has been somewhat challenging! But hopefully the youngsters are refreshed and eager to start the new term! It is a special time for the new P1 pupils and for those moving on to senior school – to all the children: we wish them a happy and fulfilling time.
Recently some negligent dog owner is not cleaning up after their dog in the grounds of the Hall at the weekends. This green area is, from time to time, used by children and the health implications to them are obvious. The committee does not want to ban dogs from the grounds but unless the grounds are kept clean, this option will be discussed. It is selfish and unacceptable not to pick up after your dog.
The next Quiz Night will be on Saturday, 4 October in the Hall. Anyone wishing to sponsor a round of questions for a £10 note, cheap enough, please contact either Carol Owen or Blair Littlejohn. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
The newsletter has been delivered to all houses, and as always is full of news of past and forthcoming events in the village. Please contact Andrew Stevenson, who puts in so much time to collect and present the information, if you have not received a copy. It is hoped to welcome newcomers to the village and its environs to forthcoming events, and you are, of course, already noting all dates in your diaries to ensure none are missed!
The first event to appear in the newsletter is in the Corn Exchange, Cupar, tomorrow, 23rd August from 10-11.30am, and it is hoped for great support from the community. Dairsie Church Hall will be open today, Friday, from 6-7pm for donations for the stalls – Baking, Books, Plants, Tombola and Bric a brac. For a small village it is quite a challenge to hold this event in Cupar, so your support is much needed and will be warmly welcomed.
Winners of the August draw of the Dairsie War Memorial Hall 200 Club draw were: J. Taylor, Dairsie - £20; S. Ferguson, Foxton - £10; B. Prophet, Balmullo - £5.
It is hoped to restart a “Tots Group” in the Village Hall for 1 to 3 years old, if there is enough interest to make it viable – day to be arranged. To find out more or to express an interest, please contact either Marianne Berghuis 871437 or Rob Watts 871038. There seem to be more wee ones in the village again, and the support and friendship among the families is always really welcome.
Last Saturday at the Corn Exchange the helpers were kept really busy, but always found time for a cheery chat. Tea and coffee flowed freely, the stalls were well supported, and friends enjoyed the chance to catch up on the news. Thanks go to all who helped, donated or were there on the day, at which the excellent sum of £726 was taken.
Autumn meetings start again on Friday, 5th September at 7pm in the Memorial Hall, when the speaker is to be Mr Eric Young, jeweller, from Cupar.
