Dairsie Tots Group

Correction. The Group is for 0-5 years old – not 3 years as quoted last week, and they meet with parent, grandparent or carer, so it is a sharing opportunity with other adults as well as for the children. More interest is hoped for to make it viable to re-start a group in the village, and there has been some response. The provisional start-up will be on Wednesday mornings from 24th September at 10-12am. Your support is really needed, not least with a get together on Saturday 6th September (tomorrow) for volunteers to come along to the village hall to help to clean and sort the existing toys and equipment. All help will be welcomed with open arms!

For more information, contact Marianne Berghuis on 871437 or Rob Watts on 871038.

Church News

The Communion Service is this Sunday 7th September at the usual time of 9.45am.

The Rev. Gareth Davies has finished his duties as Locum minister, though he will continue some duties in pastoral care through September. He was thanked warmly on Sunday for his service over the past months. All requests for pastoral care should now go to the minister the Rev Sheila Blount (tel 656408) – it is hoped that thankfully in better health, she can now fully return to her duties.

The planned Union of the two churches of Cupar St Johns and Dairsie Churches has raised the question of a name that the two churches should be known by after the union takes place later this year. Church members are being asked for suggestions which are to be passed to the Rev Sheila Blount or any Session Team member by this Sunday, 7th September. The Church of Scotland proposes that the new title shall begin with the words “Cupar and Dairsie” Comments and suggestions in writing please.

Communion Sunday

The service of the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was led by our minister, the Rev. Sheila Blount, assisted by her father, the Rev. Campbell Gillon. Her parents are currently visiting Scotland from their home in Washington D.C. where he was a minister in a Presbyterian church. He spoke of his pleasure at being invited to take a part in the worship by his daughter, and his thought provoking sermon was on the theme of prayer.

Special Service

On Sunday, 21st September, there will be a Songs of Praise Service to mark the dedication of the new organ and weather vane. It is hoped to include some of the member’s favourite hymns – suggestions in writing please to the minister by Sunday 14th September.

SWRI

At the meeting on 5th September, the President, Mary Booth, welcomed back the members after the summer break and congratulated them on winning the Cupar and District Floral and Horticultural Society Cup. She then introduced the speaker, Mr Eric Young, who gave an interesting and informative account of the history of clocks, and of his work as a maker and repairer of clocks. Mary Booth gave the vote of thanks. Tea was served by Marion Smith.

Competition winners were: Favourite piece of jewellery - 1st Anne Brown, 2nd Jeanette Armes; Flower of the month - 1st Anne Brown, 2nd Alice Johnstone.

After the business, the meeting was closed.

Dog fouling

It is very disappointing to report that the grounds of the Village Hall continue to be fouled by dogs. As stated previously in this column, the Hall grounds are used by children from time to time and, as such, the fouling is a danger to their health. The dog warden has been contacted and no doubt she will investigate. In an effort to stop this unacceptable practice, please will all villagers, especially responsible dog owners, be alert and help to keep an eye on the hall premises, and wherever this foul problem occurs. Please will all in the village help to put an end to this abominable practice.

Church News

This coming Sunday, 21st September, the service is to be a “Songs of Praise” to mark the dedication of the new organ and the weather vane. Members of the congregation were invited to suggest their favourite hymn, and it is hoped to include the most popular choices in the service.

The following week on Sunday 28th, there will be a presentation and thank you to the Rev. Gareth Davies who has served the church so well as Locum, whilst our minister recovers from her debilitating illness.

Quiz Night

Dairsie War Memorial Hall committee are inviting all locals to consider entering for the fund raising Quiz which is to be held in the hall on Saturday 4th October at 7pm. They wish to make it clear that a table for a team of four people is £5, but all individuals are welcome, already with a team or not, so do go along and join in the fun at this great evening out.

Songs of Praise

The worship was led on Sunday by the minister, the Rev Sheila Blount, and took the form of a “Songs of praise” with the hymns chosen from suggestions of favourites nominated by members of the congregation. It was good to be able to sing out in full voice as of course the choices were of well loved and familiar hymns. There were prayers of dedication for the organ, and the organist proudly chose to play Elgar’s “Enigma Variations,” to the appreciative congregation. There were prayers too for the dedication of the weather vane, and embroidery of the vane, usually hanging in the vestry, was displayed – this work was done by Mrs Eileen McKechnie some years ago. Lewis Thomson, the organist, spoke afterwards of his pleasure at playing this fine instrument.

The Rev Gareth Davies

Sunday 28th September marks the last day of his service as locum during the minister’s illness, and on that day he will lead the worship and will receive a presentation of appreciation of his time at Dairsie Parish Church. Anyone wishing to contribute who has not done so, should hand it in a sealed envelope to any member of the church session.

Dairsie Tots Group

The committee thank all who helped to clean the toys and to get organised for the start-up of the group. Our thanks too to the Hall Committee, especially Carol Owen, for their support and permission to extend the use of the hall for the protracted clean-up. There is now enough interest to encourage a start-up, and all under fives with their Mums, Dads, Grandparents, and Carers etc are most welcome on Wednesdays during term time from 10.00 to 12.00 starting on the 1st October. The committee look forward to seeing you there.

An appeal – they need good quality toys in working order - do you have any outgrown and cluttering up space in your home which the group will gladly take off your hands? The special need is for toys, playmats etc. for the babies and youngest members. Anything considered and collected if required. Contacts are Marianne Berghuis 871437, Rob Watts 871038 or Sarah Whitson 870082.
