The coffee morning held in the village hall on Saturday was very well supported. It was especially welcome to see quite a number of younger folks there and the atmosphere was really lively and friendly. It was held by the Memorial Hall committee to raise funds for the upkeep of our village hall, and the chairperson, Carol Owen, thanked everyone who came, or who contributed to the raffle or stalls and all those who helped, and is pleased to report that the excellent sum of £386 was raised.
On Sunday 26th April 2009, during morning worship in Dairsie Church, the minister, the Rev. Sheila Blount, led prayers for the ordination and admission of eight new elders to the United Church of Cupar St Johns and Dairsie. Two of the newly appointed elders normally worship in Dairsie Church - they are Mary Campbell Brown and Hazel Smith, and together with the others ordained, they were welcomed with warm handshakes of greeting.
The Dairsie War Memorial Committee are holding a Quiz Night in the hall on Saturday 16th May at 7pm. Teams of 4 cost £5. On April 20th the President, Willa Ferguson, opened the last meeting of the session. After a hymn, a reading and a prayer for the 50 years of Dairsie Guild, members had the pleasure of welcoming Mrs Alison Twaddle, General Secretary of the Church of Scotland Guild. She was a delightful and relaxed speaker and she spoke of her life and her many years of association with the Church and the Guild. It was at St Andrews that she met her husband-to-be when she was reading Languages, and he was a Divinity student. Over the years she has held most offices with the Guild and for the last 10 years she has been a member of staff in the Headquarters in Edinburgh. Though in the office a great deal, she takes the opportunity to travel to as many Guilds as possible, having travelled to remote islands as well as all over the mainland. Warm thanks were expressed and the welcome tea and chat ended the meeting.
Annually there is a service in one of the churches in the Cupar group of St Andrews Presbytery - Cupar Old and St Michael, Cupar St Johns, Ceres, Dairsie, Kemback, and Springfield. The service was held in Dairsie Church on Sunday 3rd May and worship was led by the minister, the Rev Sheila Blount. There was a large congregation of members from the Cupar group and praise was given for the unity of the churches. Refreshments followed in the church hall with the opportunity for warm fellowship.
On Sunday 10th May, this special Tea will be held in Dairsie church hall from 3-4pm. It is connected with Christian Aid week, and the idea of Rich and Poor is symbolic of help given throughout the world by Aid workers and this tea is held for the charity. All are welcome.
Dairsie "Rural" welcomed members from Kennoway for an Inter Institute visit. The members from Kennoway entertained with a demonstration, recitations and a quiz, all applauded warmly by their hosts. Refreshments were enjoyed and the competitions were judged.
Competition winners were : Savoury Dip - 1st Janette Armes, 2nd Marion Smith; Flower of the month - 1st Rhona Ferguson, 2nd Agnes Jeff.
The ladies of Dairsie Church Guild enjoyed a real treat recently. They were invited by Hugh and Pat Laidlaw of Monimail to see the bluebells in their wood, and for a cup of tea. Much information was given on the variety of plants, shrubs and trees, and the rain stayed away just long enough for it all to be viewed during the leisurely stroll. The cup of tea was a feast of home baking, so thanks were warm indeed.
Dairsie Church was a busy place on Sunday. At the morning service, the Rev. Sheila Blount led the worship, and two new elders were presented for ordination and admission. Then, the church hall was open in the afternoon for a Rich and Poor Tea, when those who assembled bravely through the torrential rain shared a rich tea or a sparse one, meanwhile thinking of those with plenty and those suffering throughout the world from war, poverty and so on. The event was as part of Christian Aid week and it raised around £120 for the charity.
There is a house-to-house collection this week for Christian Aid - their work helps those in need worldwide, often with danger to the charity workers as they give their help, so your support is much needed.
The nine teams had a great evening, with the eventual winners "The Dimwits" comprising Judy and Martin Dowling and Fay and Alec Milne. The Hall Committee chair, Carol Owen thanked Blair Littlejohn for compiling the Quiz, and also all who had helped and all who came to support the event.
Now, out with the diaries! A forthcoming event to enjoy - on Saturday June 20th from 2-4pm, the Hall Committee are holding a Strawberry Tea in the Hall and grounds. Go along, enjoy the tasty fruit and a wander round the stalls - the usual Cake and candy, Tombola and Raffle for which donations would be much appreciated. There will also be competitions and games, so all the family will be well catered for. Good weather would be a bonus!
Winners of the May draw of the Dairsie War Memorial Hall 200 Club were: G. Mason - £20; K. Crow - £10; A. Barclay - £5.
My last report and I am rather sad - to my surprise! I have much enjoyed my 25 years, but time now for me to take it easy and, hopefully, someone who would be interested in the village and its events and activities, and generally sharing the news, will step forward and find it as interesting as I have found it to be. In the interim, individual groups can head their news item (Dairsie News) and send email to edherald@fifetoday.co.uk or take copy in to the Cupar Office by noon on Tuesdays. Now I look forward to reading the Dairsie News with, hopefully, a new name at the top. A special thank you to those who have faithfully kept me informed of items of interest. Bye now!
The convener of the collection thanks all who gave their time to collect for the charity, Christian Aid and also expresses her thanks to all who gave so generously and is pleased to report that the collection came to £380.
